Each year we try to teach Biblical lessons, games, and other classes at camp. Some of the classes are geared to health and development. I thought you might be interested in seeing one of the projects that the guys will be learning this year. It is a solar light bulb. There are lots of websites out there about it, but this is the first time we’ve attempted it.
Of course before you teach something you must practice and make sure it works and that you can teach it in the allotted amount of time. So we have been practicing at my house how to put this light bulb together. The results are pretty cool. All the research recommended a 2 litre soda bottle but we wanted to try first with a small 500 ml bottle. Our test area was a little toilet building and everyone that has seen it is shocked!
They say that a 2 litre bottle will produce light equivalent to more than 50 watts of electricity if facing the sun directly. This little 500 ml bottle did pretty well!
Before and After results
As you can see it will come in handy for small places that don’t have sufficient window light. I’d be curious to see how much light comes through with a full moon.
All that is needed is a small piece of tin roofing, some glue to seal around the bottle and tin to make sure rain doesn’t come in, a plastic bottle, clean water, and some bleach to keep the water clear.
