MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA
I’ll never tire of the opportunity to see the amazing and unique African animals in the Game Parks.
It was wonderful to drive through the park with my parents and Pastor Mark! The animals seemed less skittish than I have ever seen them. We were less than 20 ft away from wild elephants, impala, and baboons. And then there were zebras, wildebeest, cape buffalo, giraffe, jackals, warthogs, tons of unique and colorful birds, etc…
Jackals, often seen with their mate.
Wildebeest, often seen together with zebras.
Impala, found by the hundreds all throughout the park.
Zebras, communicating with each other to get away from the car and the people taking pictures.
These big storks were moving the impala out of the way to catch some sort of insect. They are huge! their shoulders are nearly as high as the impalas.
Lilac-breasted roller, which is just amazing when it flies, but hard to capture. here you can see the green head, lilac chest, turquoise belly and wings, etc…
Wild Guinea fowl. It almost looks like the blue was painted on their necks!
Dad was thrilled to see the Cape Buffalo! We saw several males in mud puddles throughout the park, but it was really cool to see an entire herd cross the road in front of us. It is definitely birthing season as we saw many new born calves.
At the hippo pool we saw lots of hippos, but it was like a game trying to snap a picture when they popped their heads out for breath!
This hungry crocodile kept us away from the water’s edge in a nearby pond.
On the first day, we only saw a couple giraffes in the distance, but on the second day, we saw so many up close. These two are so different in coloring. God makes each unique!
This guy was running and the bird that usually hangs out on his neck was trying to keep up!
There are so many good pictures, it’s been hard to choose a summary of our trip. The elephants were constantly flapping their ears to cool off.
These two females and their little one were not very happy when this big, old Bull elephant came by. You can see one protecting the little one and the other was making noises to show her displeasure.
We saw several warthogs, but the bigger ones were quite elusive. I guess they didn’t want the rest of you to see them!
Lunch break, overlooking the park! We could see elephants, impala, buffalo, and baboons while enjoying our meal.
The baboons were always running so most of the pictures didn’t turn out but mom is happy that you can see their colorful backside!
Baobab trees are amazing! Some of them date back more than 1,000 years.
This tree is just huge!
Many of the roads in the park are impassable. We took one such road, in search of lions, which seemed fine at first but later I had to reverse out. In the process of reversing, we slipped into the wet and muddy ditch. We were stuck there for a bit before we found a couple big rocks which helped the front tire to get out of the muck. Otherwise the park headquarters would have sent someone to tow us out.
We’ve been blessed to see rainbows on each of the last three days throughout the country.
