the flood
Well, it's time to confess. I was very forgetful a while ago! I turned on the bath and went to do 'something', I can't even remember what. Anyways, after being interrupted, I forgot completely that the water was running.
I watched a movie in the office, which is far from the bathroom. Afterward, I went to take a shower (totally forgetting I'd already run water for a bath). I didn't realize it until I got to my hallway and saw water running into my kitchen!
I ran through it to turn of the water and pull the plug, socks and all! I surveyed the damage that had been done. Nothing of real value was ruined. Some toilet paper, a book that I was not enjoying anyway, and a deck of cards. The rugs and shoes on the floor were floating around. My bathroom and bedroom were in at least 2 inches of water. Then it went down the hall to the kitchen. I'm thankful that I have all cement floors!
After picking things up that shouldn't sit in the water or that were close to getting wet. I began the seemingly, unending task of moving water. I starting with a squeegy in the kitchen and pushed the water out the door for a long time. Then I moved to the bathroom.
It took a couple minutes to realize that there was no way I would succeed in squeegy-ing the water around corners to the door. So I found the dustpan and started scooping the water into the tub. This was a test of my leg muscles as it meant squatting the entire time!
Then on to the bedroom, again there is no way to move the water near the doors, and there is no tub. So I ran upstairs to haul down our large laundry tubs and began filling them once again with my little, locally made, metal dustpan. More squatting, and tossing of water (trading off hands as one got tired), and nearly blisters from the handle!
I had to run upstairs for more containers half way through the project! After filling all four laundry tubs, there was a little bit left and that was good enough for towels on the floor.
By now it is 11:30 pm. I'm exhausted and have an early morning trip to take. I left the water in the tubs until help came in the morning to move it. In the other rooms there were slight traces of water here and there, but nothing like the flood it was!
I figure that if one tub is 3 1/2 buckets of water (20 lt/ 5 gal) and the bedroom alone was 4 + tubs. I moved at least 60-80 gallons of water that night.
I never did get my bath b/c there was only one 55 gal drum of hot water and that ran out long before I saw the flood! I was sore for the next few days, but thankful that more wasn't ruined!
